March 2020—Ministry Update: COVID-19
Dear Thrive Family,
As part of the Thrive community, we know there are concerns around COVID-19 and how it will affect your ministry plans with us, especially upcoming retreats. We want you to feel supported and informed as we navigate the coming weeks.
We are daily staying updated with current information as we continue to monitor the evolving public health situation. We have decided to proactively align with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) guidelines and precautionary health measures, especially travel.
Our Thrive Board of Directors is continuing to evaluate the situation closely.
It is important to know, as of today, that the Brazil retreat remains open.
We understand there are many questions, and as things change we will be doing our best to provide updates and information. In recognition of each of our unique circumstances and needs, we hope the information below will help keep you informed. As always, our staff is here to support you.
Participants who have recently returned from high-risk areas
The CDC recommends that anyone who has traveled from an affected area or who has been in close contact with individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 should minimize contact with others for 14 days from the last date of such travel or exposure.
As such, participants who have travelled to any area with Level 3 travel advisories—as declared by the CDC—or who may have come into contact with individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 are requested to exercise caution by following the CDC’s guidelines and stay at home if their Thrive experience is within 14 or less days from the last date of travel or such exposure.
If you fall into this category, please contact us immediately to discuss how to move forward.
Participants who are joining us in Brazil after traveling to any area with Level 2 travel advisories—as declared by the CDC—may keep their reservation and join us in Iguazu Falls. However, they should ensure they are self-monitoring for any symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) and consult with a medical provider if these are observed.
Participants exhibiting signs of illness
We ask that volunteers and attendees exhibiting signs of a respiratory illness see a doctor and get approval to travel. We recognize some people might have a simple common cold that is not a major concern. However, the CDC recommends that anyone with symptoms of an acute respiratory illness avoid travel until that individual is symptom free, without the aid of symptom-altering medicines, for 24 hours. The CDC defines such symptoms as a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, a cough, or shortness of breath.
Participants not exhibiting signs of illness or returning from high-risk areas
Participants who have not exhibited any signs of illness and have not returned from high-risk areas and/or come in contact with individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 are welcome to come to the Brazil retreat for their reserved experience as planned.
Everyone is encouraged to practice good hygiene habits to stay healthy and prevent the spread of illness:
Wash hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Stay home when sick.
Please pray for continued discernment as we move forward in faith and wisdom, not fear.
As public health recommendations evolve, we will continue taking steps to protect the health and well-being of our volunteers and attendees.
