Zoom Common Questions

+ How do I launch Zoom and participate in the sessions?
Under each session you’ve registered for in the hub, the Zoom link is available. You will also receive an email reminder one hour before each session you’ve registered for that contains a link to the hub detail page for that session. Click this link, then the zoom link on the session page to join the meeting at the scheduled time. Note: Closing any applications you don't need for the meeting with improve the quality of your connection.


+ What are the basic controls in Zoom?
The Zoom menu bar appears at the bottom of the Zoom window once the meeting begins. If you don’t see the menu bar, move your mouse slightly and the bar will appear. (The bar disappears after a few seconds.) 
You can: 
Mute/unmute your audio
Stop/start your video
View a list of all participants
Send a message to one person (private chat) or to all participants (everyone)
Record the meeting (we will record the session, so you will not have the ability to do so)
React to something the speaker says with emojis
Leave the meeting


+ How do I turn my audio on and off?
On most devices, when signing into a Zoom meeting, you can join computer/device audio by clicking Join Audio, Join with Computer Audio, or Audio to access the audio settings. To mute or unmute yourself at any point during the meeting, click the mute/unmute microphone icon at the bottom left of your Zoom menu bar. 


We recommend wearing headphones to avoid audio feedback.


+ How do I turn my video on and off?
On most devices, when signing into a Zoom meeting, you can join computer/device video by clicking Join with Video. To turn your video off or on at any point during the meeting, click the start/stop video camera icon at the bottom left of your Zoom menu bar.


+ How do I change my display name?
To change your display name, hover over your video in the Zoom meeting. Click the three dots in the top right corner of your video. Click “Rename.” Type in the new name you would like to display.


+ How do I change from seeing just the speaker to seeing all participants in the meeting (and vice versa)?
At the top right of your Zoom window, you’ll see a button that says “speaker view” or “gallery view.” To only see the person talking, click so it says “speaker view.” To see a collage of all participants, click “gallery view.” If there are more people in the meeting than will fit on one screen, there will be an arrow at the right side of the Zoom window. Click this arrow to scroll to see more participants. To go back to the first screen, click the arrow at the left to scroll back.


+ How do I message people in Zoom?
The chat feature provides the ability to send instant messages during the session. You can send a private chat to one person or message all participants. In the event you experience issues with your microphone, using the chat feature can serve as an alternate means of communication. 
Click on “Chat” in the bottom menu bar. Messages are sent to all participants (everyone) by default. You can message an individual participant via private chat by clicking on the drop down menu, and selecting an individual’s name. Type a message and press “Enter” on your keyboard to send.


+ I can’t hear the other participants in the meeting.
Make sure your computer speaker volume is turned up.
Make sure your speakers are selected for the active output in Zoom.
In the Zoom meeting, Choose Audio > Audio Settings
Click the Test Speaker button, if you hear audio this is setup correctly. If you do not hear audio, use the drop down box and select a different output and press Test Speaker again. Repeat this step until you hear audio.


+ Other participants in the meeting can’t hear me.
Make sure you have the correct internal/external microphone setup in Zoom.
In the Zoom meeting, Choose Audio > Audio Settings
Click the Test Mic button; you should see blue bars in the volume meter and your test message will be replayed through the speakers.
If you do not see the blue volume meter bars or hear the audio message your recorded, use the drop down box and select another mic and repeat the process.


+ What do I do if I still can’t figure it out?
Sometimes the best thing to try is logging out of Zoom completely, then logging back in. If this doesn’t work, try restarting your computer, then logging back into Zoom. If you are unable to connect, you may need to watch the session recording at a later date. We apologize for the inconvenience!
